THE NECKLACE

Madame Mathilde Loisel is born into a lower-middle-class family and dreams a luxurious life. She marries a low-paid clerk who tries his best to make her happy but has little to give. A day her husband receives an invitation for the both of them to the Ministry of Education party but Mathilde refuses to go because she has nothing to wear. Her husband gives her all the money that he was saving to buy a hunting rifle to purchase a new dress but she is not happy because she wants a jewel to wear. Her husband suggests borrowing something from her rich friend, Madame Jeanne Forestier. Mathilde goes to her and chooses a diamond necklace. After attending the party, Mathilde discovers that she has lost the necklace and tries to find it. She goes to a jewelry store and finds a very similar necklace but it costs 40 000 francs. The couple sells everything they own and must secure loans at high interest rates to pay for the necklace. Ten years later Mathilde meets Madame Forestier and tells her the story to buy a new necklace but Madame Forestier explains that her necklace was fake.
