THE YEOMAN WARDERS

The Yeoman Warders, or Beefeaters, are the wardens of the tower of London. They were introduced by King Henry VIII and they guarded the prisoners and the Crown Jewels. Today they guide the tourists who visit the Tower. The Beefeaters are 36 and they live in the Tower with their families. The Beefeaters are famous for their red and gold uniform, but they only wear this on formal occasions. Most of the time they wear a dark blue uniform with red trimmings. The name "Beefeaters" cames from the French word "buffetier" that was the guard in the palace of the French King. Another theory says that the Beefeaters got meat instead of money as a salary.

CINCO DE MAYO

"Cinco de Mayo" is a holiday that is celebrated annually in Mexico and the United States on the 5th of May. Its origins date back to the Mexican-American community and enhance the themes of democracy and freedom in the early years of the American Civil War. Today, the anniversary is seen as a celebration of Mexican pride. In Mexico, and mainly in the state of Puebla, the festival commemorates the day of the victory over the French troops at the Battle of Puebla (5th of May, 1862) and is also known as "El Día de la Batalla de Puebla". The birth of the holiday is due not to the Mexican population but to the Mexican-American community in California; later spread throughout the country. During the celebrations we are used signs that read "Cinco de Mayo" while schools organize events as regional songs and dances. "Cinco de Mayo" is now a major advertising of Mexican products.

HAPPY LABOR DAY

On 1 May is celebrated as Labor Day or Labor Day in many countries around the world to remember the commitment of the trade union movement and the achievements of workers in economic and social fields. International Workers' Day, also known as Labor Day in some places, is a celebration of laborers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labor movement and occurs every year on May Day, 1 May, an ancient European spring holiday. The date was chosen for International Workers' Day by the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on 4 May 1886. Being a traditional European spring celebration, May Day is a national public holiday in many countries, but in only some of those countries is it celebrated specifically a "International Workers' Day".

EARTH DAY

Earth Day is the day when we celebrate the environment and save the planet Earth. The United Nations celebrate this festival on April 22nd. The celebration involves precisely 175 countries. In time, Earth Day has become an educational and informative event on the problems of the planet: the pollution of air, water and soil, destruction of ecosystems, plants and animals that disappear and the depletion of non-renewable resources. You are looking for solutions that eliminate the negative effects of human activities: the recycling of materials, conservation of natural resources such as oil and gas fossil, a ban on using chemicals, the cessation of the destruction of habitats and the protection of endangered species. The "Earth Day" was discussed for the first time in 1962 by Senator Nelson. But finally he took shape in 1969 following the environmental disaster caused by the oil spill from the well of Union Oil, California.

KATY PERRY

My article is about...
Californian Katy Perry, 24, is the star of the moment. She had two hits: "I Kissed a Girl", which was about her attraction for another woman, but Katy herself isn't gay; and "Hot'n'Cold", which was about her problematic boyfriend. Both songs come from her album, "One of the Boys", which is "triple platinum" in the United States.
In addition to her music, Katy Perry is famous for her colorful clothes. Katy Perry's childhood probably wasn't typical for a pop star. Her parents are Christians and professional ministers. Katy, in fact, began singing in church. At first she wanted to be a gospel and country singer and she recorded her first album at the age of 15. She used her real name, Katy Hudson. After this Katy worked on various projects. After this she signed with Capital Records. And it was at this point that she changed her name to Katy Perry as "Katy Hudson".

JENNIFER LOPEZ

My article is about...
Even though she was born in the Bronx, a notoriously rough part of New York, Jennifer Lopez is one of the world's most successful entertainers. Primarily an actress and singer, her business empire includes fashion and perfume, TV production and part ownership of the Miami Dolphins football team. Jennifer Lopez is a career woman and this may explain why she first became a mother in her late 30s. She and her third husband had twins two years ago.
Motherhood is the theme of her latest movie, "The Back-up Plan". She plays Zoe, a successful career woman who has yet to find the man of her dreams. She decides to have twins but, on the same day, she meets her perfect man: Stan.
