THE YEOMAN WARDERS

The Yeoman Warders, or Beefeaters, are the wardens of the tower of London. They were introduced by King Henry VIII and they guarded the prisoners and the Crown Jewels. Today they guide the tourists who visit the Tower. The Beefeaters are 36 and they live in the Tower with their families. The Beefeaters are famous for their red and gold uniform, but they only wear this on formal occasions. Most of the time they wear a dark blue uniform with red trimmings. The name "Beefeaters" cames from the French word "buffetier" that was the guard in the palace of the French King. Another theory says that the Beefeaters got meat instead of money as a salary.
